“Grill’d” burger bar in church street Parramatta runs monthly “LOCAL” competitions. Grill’d donates a total of $500 to three local organisations each month, with $300 to most liked organisation. The clients choose the winners by dropping bottle tops into three jars represneting each organisation. In the month of January PDMSInc was one of the contenders.

Thanks to our kind supporters who frequent Grill’d and purchased meals there (for which they recieve a bottle top) and voting for our Men’s shed. PDMSInc were fortunate enough to be nominated the most favoured for January …… read the Grill’d notification here

This donation will go towards some equipment for the shed members.

LGSA Environment Awards 2014

PDMS were requested to make LGSA Environment Awards 2014 picture frames.

Parramatta District Men’s Shed Inc. were asked by the Local Government and Shires Association to produce some 64 picture frames to house the Excellence in Environment Award certificates. The Frames had to be made out of recycled materials, glazed from recycled or seconds glass, and made to look old but New!!!! A simple brief……

Men at the shed combined their skills to recycle some off-cuts of marine plywood, glued them together to make the thickness required, edged the frames on a router and sanded the rough timber to eliminate splinters but not the rustic look. The frames were then put under a “blow torch” to create a weathered look. Then some lacquer to seal them. Backing boards were chamfered and the certificates mounted ready for final presentation to the lucky winners.

Certificates were presented to winners at a ceremony of the 2nd December 2014 in Sydney.

PDMSInc has a very close relationship with Parramatta City Council, especially in recycling of materials and self sufficiency. As such we would like to make all our friends aware of a scholarship opportunity offered by the council.

Vege garden   If you are interested in obtaining a certificate in Permaculture Design then this will be for you.

However the offer closes shortly (2nd February 2015).

Great news! We’ve been nominated to participate in the Grill’d Local Matters donation program at Grill’d Parramatta this month.

Every month, Grill’d donates $500 to local groups and asks their customers to decide who the money goes to.
When customers buy a burger, they will receive a token to put into one of 3 jars representing different groups. Whoever has the most tokens at the end of the month receives $300. The other two groups receive $100 each.

The Australian Government is delivering on its election commitments to the electorate of Parramatta through the Community Development Grants…

“The funding will provide metal and wood working power tools and machinery for the Men’s Shed which was established in 2012,” Senator Payne said.

“The Men’s Shed is an important asset to Parramatta, helping men to learn new skills, meet new friends and enhance the local community.”

Parramatta Men’s Shed Public Officer Kerry Boyce said he was delighted with the funding, which allowed the Men’s Shed to purchase much-needed new equipment including a wood lathe, a band saw, a metal milling machine, a MIG welder, and an automatic external defibrillator …. Read More

Minister Jai ROWELL visits Parramata District Men’s Shed

Minister_Rowell-1Minister_Rowell-2Minister_Rowell-1The Hon. Jai Rowell, MP, NSW Minister for Mental Health visited Parramatta today (7th July 2014) to learn of the work, and lend his support and congratulations to the Parramatta Men’s Shed.

“Men’s Sheds are filling a much needed social connection while maintaining skills developed over a life-time. The Parramatta Men’s Shed provides opportunities to create and build, while socialising and contributing to the community.
“That’s why today I am pleased to announce a one-off $500 grant to the Shed which will be used to aid the purchase of specialist tools for use by the members.

Member for Parramatta, the Hon. Geoff Lee MP, has been a strong supporter of the Men’s Shed.

Parramatta Men’s Shed has not been slow in reaching out to the broader community. The members recently completed a community garden bed for Boronia Multicultural Services, another important community based organisation providing migrant and refugee services.

TWENTY new homes for western Sydney’s injured or displaced brushtail possums have been built by four boys from Constitution Hill with the help from the Parramatta District Men’s Shed.

Boys from Karabi youth centre at Constitution Hill teamed up with Men’s shed volunteers during the school holidays to construct the boxes, which will be used by Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Services (WIRES) to rehome brushtail possums from places like residential home roof cavities.

It’s true – every Bloke needs a shed

PDMSInc0001Men of any age are invited to join the Parramatta District Men’s Shed Inc. to try their hand at woodwork, metalwork or gardening.

The group founded by Vietnam Veterans Doug Mackay and Kerry Boyce as a men’s peer health project, aims to encourage men to get together for hands-on community projects as well as to talk about any problems with which they may be grappling.
